Most people here especially the admins :P know i have been banned in the past.

I get accused daily of cheating. I have to tell ya, its getting very annoying. I have been playing this game for 10 years, and i have played rail only servers exclusively for the last 5. Im not sure why people think the winner of the game cheats. Even after 10 years of playing i learn almost daily new tips or tactics to the game to help me improve. This may be a long post so settle in folks ;)

Let me start off by telling everyone, i live in St. Louis, and so does Admin SKidm@rk. I have invited Skidm@rk to come over to my house, drink a beer and meet another quaker. He is more than welcome to look at my PC, use my config with his key settings of course, then sit and watch me play and first hand see that i do not cheat. There is no more definitive way to be open to scrutiny than that. That hands down will be proof from an admin to all that i do not have any type of bot or cheat in my game.

With that said let me point out a few things. Your system and set up is directly related to the level of play that you will acheive. That goes for processor, RAM, Video card , internet connect etc.

I currently run 2gigs ram, with a 512 MB geforce video card and a 5MB cable speed. All more than adequate for playing Q3.

Now, i have offered help to said accusers, some have taken my help and advice, others seem more happy to think they are being beaten by a cheater. The latter will never improve if they do not accept help.

My set up includes:

Razer copperhead laser mouse
Razer HP-1 headphones (headphones are a must in gaming IMO)
Razer AC-1 soundcard (must have good sound card for directional purposes)
Geforce 512 MB video card
USB keyboard.

Then take the time necessary to tweak all of the above for optimum usage.

Next, settings in game, and this is where i have found numerous players in VOGON games not using the config to its advantage. (My config is completely within PB parameters)

1) mouse sensitivity or /sensitivity (this must be set higher than in standard games to accomadate the speed of excessive)

2)cl_mouseaccel this can be set but i recommend VERY LITTLE. this may overpower the sensitivity, each must be tested together to see what feels best.

3) r_picmip i personally like r_picmip 4 , its a nice blend of muted textures, and really helps make your opponents contrast to the backgrounds.

4) r_gamma i prefer r_gamma 1.5 this helps tone down the red backgrounds which is popular on most maps.

5) cg_fov , i prefer /cg_fov 120 or higher, up to 150 on some maps. I helped a player the other day that was still using default of /cg_fov 90. 90 is way too close up and you cant see hardly any of the map except whats in front of you. You must set it to 120 or higher to keep opponents in view at all times.

6) lighting.... i prefer Vertex lighting which is an option in game setup then i adjust brightness to bright to rid all shadows in game. So my setting for that is r_mapOverBrightBits "5".

All of the above settings make the game less pretty, but im not playing to look at neat graphics, im here to frag and win games.

Ok, on to tactics.

1) Some may laugh but the best way to win is to STAY ALIVE!!!!. If you die and respawn, you have to return to the action which takes time. Do not run into rooms aimlessly. Since the game settings offer splash damage, shoot the floor on the other side of the doorway to hear for a "grunt" of a waiting opponent.

Keep your back to a wall at all times if possible to keep opponents from shooting you in the back. When you spawn quickly look behind you to see if an opponent is nearby. Use the move backward button alot, most opponents expect you to move forward thereby they lead their shots in front of you.

Do the unexpected, meaning, if you are engaged in battle and an opponent is on the other side of a door, go around and shoot him in the back. With the speed of excessive and using the hook this will take 2-3 seconds tops.

Frag the person looking at you first, he is your worst enemy at the moment. Do not run into a room and think you are going to kill 8 people jumping around like mad. Kill the highest risk player first then stand and perimeter and pick off the rest while they keep each other occupied.

MOST IMPORTANTLY: do not just rapid fire because the excessive MOD allows it, choose your shots wisely and use your patience to your advantage. By doing so you will feel as if the game slows down a bit and it will help your accuracy.

Also and almost as important, STAY ON THE GROUND: When you jump in the air, you take away your ability to dodge rail slugs, its like shooting skeet.

All of this will take discipline, but you will improve your game trust me. And like i said im here to help anyone that needs it. Feel free to PM me or email me.

I hope this was more useful than boring, and please people before you accuse someone of cheating take in consideration all i have mentioned above.

Heck you never know Skidm@rk may take me up on my offer :D :P :D

To all that are keeping these games and forums running, keep up the good work.

Hey Warnite,

I've actually been lucky enough to dodge a more than a few of your rails before, so I'm not inclined to think you use a bot, but I've only played a map or two with you. I like to give everyone the benefit of the doubt, though, and I'm exceedingly interested in tweaking my settings to match yours. I'll see if that helps my gameplay, especially since my FPS proprioception has gotten considerably better since playing on CHAOS.

Thanks for sharing the specific settings so I can create another config file to use.

While this won't necessarily prove you're not using a bot, I will report my findings here as to whether they truly helped improve my game. Fellow players, let me know if you try this, too, okay? By my logic, if my game improves markedly, then it's indeed possible you're an absolute badass on rails, especially since you have way more experience with the RG than I.

Well, I just played for a bit with those settings, and while I've still got a long way to go with railgun experience, I must say that those settings do indeed make enemies easier to spot!

thx irideck,

also i forgot to add, after some of the video settings you must do a /vid_restart.

Another oversight i had that helps alot is, choose a model that is loud, i chose Keel.

Then force model in game setup options. This makes it much easier to hear where opponents spawn, and helps with directional sound of exacly where your opponent is including floors above and below.

After 5 years of play, i was forcing model but i had chosen a less annoying model by sound. A friend convinced me to try keel and i was amazed at how much easier it was to quickly locate your opponents.

Thanks for the suggestions nite. They could improve a players' ability to a point. But,
you forgot to mention, wether on purpose, or by mistake, that most, if not all, of your suggestion's, will get you kicked from a PB enabled server. Now I don't deem myself an "excellent" player, but if I, myself, were to use any of them, and wanted to play on a PB
server, only to realize, I couldn't, because of these setting's, then what good are they.
Which leads me to another point, regarding them. They(the settings) are tailored for a
Vogon type server (no PB), so as to give you an "advantage", over most, if not all, other's that happen to be there.
If your going to give help/suggestion's to anyone, do yourself, and everyone that happen's to take them, both sides of the coin.
And while I'm here, you forgot to mention a few other setting's, hardware(CPU, Memory,
PS, type of HDD), which I would find more interesting, than a config, that I personally,
couldn't use.

I'll be glad to discuss, what it really takes, to enjoy, fully, and have fun, playing Q3.

Heya fub@r.... good points.

You may have missed in my post that all of the config settings i use ARE allowed by PB. I came from servers that all ran PB and i was within the settings required. I do not fully understand the PB setting setup meaning if some are strict settings dictated by PB and only PB or if a server admin can ease up on some settings to allow a wider spectrum of options for each players comfort zone. You and Dyn, and skid, and stick would probably know that answer better than i would. All i know is that my settings were allowed in the PB run servers i played in.

As far as my PC:

AMD athlon 3700
2 gigs RAM
WD raptor 10,000 HD SATA
XION supernova 600W modular power supply

By todays standards my system is getting outdated, but its more than adequate for Q3.

I hope that helps FuB@R...........

PS now try my settings, they are legal B)

Also, there are many good players in here, please share your ideas or settings and suggestions, im more than willing to learn better ways to play

Hey Warnite,

I've seen what I believe to be an example of forced models in Fragged, a video by RazorX (you can find it just about anywhere), but I'm unable to find a way to do it the way he has, where you've only changed the models of "enemy" players. How is this accomplished?

Fub@r, is doing this on our server expressly against the rules, and if so, why? If everyone has the capability to do this without 3rd party software, then I'd be curious to know the reasons.

Thanks again for the pointers; I must admit, while my aim with the rail remains reminiscent of a 3-year old with diarrhea, I'm getting there.

For those of you out there with 3-year-olds, I'm sorry if I jinxed you. :)

You can force model just by /esc game options. I do know that some mods allow you to choose a model to play with and you can force enemy model to a diff model. I will find the config command and let you know. In the mean time, fub@r can let us know if this mod or if vogon allows this.

as far as your rail being reminiscent of a 3 year old with diarrhea, does that mean that your rail sprays in diff directions?

Ha, couldnt resist :P

Heh..only when playing against Levis, =RS=, or DarthSidius. :)

Thanks for the info. I found the ability to force models, but it seems as though you have to play the same model for it to work....seems somewhat counterintuitive to me.

Maybe OSP is required for that...

Wow ;)

I stand corrected nite. I should have said, that those settings would not be allowed on a Vogon PB Server. But then, I did some checking, and discovered, that most PB server's, that I visited, did infact, kick me, for more than a few of your settings. I then consulted, with a few people I happen to know, and they tell me, that the Administrator of a PB server, has the right to alter the settings, to allow a wider range of settings.
Which could explain, why your able to play with them. I can only assume, you played
on server's that either knew you, or they feel that these settings, aren't considered
cheats. But on a Vogon server, we do consider them an unfair advantage.

Speaking of which, I now turn my attention to, the forced model issue.
Irideck, you seem to be under the impression I change my skin, and those of other players', consistantly. I can tell you, and speaking entirely as an Admin, if Dyn, or
any of the other Admin's knew/know that I was using an OSP mod, that allows you to
keep your skin, and change other players' skin's, adding a "glow", as to give me an
advantage ingame, I can tell you, that my days as an Admin, would be short lived here.
Four out of five Admin's, consider the OSP mod a cheat. We have banned player's for
using it. I do not, I repeat, do NOT, use an OSP mod. Infact, I don't use forced player
model's. I keep the same skin(bones) with the headmodel of either, PaulJ, or Xian.
I think they're cute :D

This is just for comparison nite. These are what make my game rock.

ASUS M2N 32 WS PRO
AMD FX-62 Dual Core
Gigabyte 7900GTX - just for graphic's
2 Seagate Barracuda ES SATA 3.0Gb/s ST3250620NS
3 Gig's Kingston DDR2 800 Dual Channel - just to keep it all fast
Enermax Infinity 720W Modular PS - just to run the vidcard
Creative SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS 7.1
Matched with the Creative T6600 series Spk's - just to hear everything
Razer DeathAdder - DPI 1800
Logitech USB Headset - 20hz - 20 khz

Now I do realize, that mine is a tad on the overkill side, just to play Q3.
But what it does do, is give me an advantage in spotting people that use
"things" that enhance they're ability, while playing Q3.

That being said, I truly hope, you may pickup some tip's on my setup.
It works wonders :)

heheh i bow to that system........dude thats sweet.

You picked some great components.

If and when i can build a new one, mostly what you have is what i would want in a PC. With that said if you build a new one before me, i call dibs on yours :D .

How do you like the deathadder? i really like my copperhead but the specs on the adder look awesome.

Thx for the info Fub@r.

Hey Fub@r,

Thanks for the reply, but there was a slight misunderstanding: at no point did I mean to suggest that you use OSP models at all! However, some people use models which can be very difficult to see when on the Blue team. I've noticed that some of those players (which I'll avoid naming) also play on the Blue team almost exclusively, and I'm fairly certain it's because of the stealth factor.

What I was asking is if you can make enemies all use the same model (not with a glow, of course; that'd be unfair!), say, Klesk, and have your teammates all use their own respective models.

Just curious!
