Connection issues when other players connect; How to fix this?

Hi guys,

If any of you have played with me recently, you've seen me say "Gaaaaah, lag!" more than once. Unfortunately, I'm usually holding the flag at the time, and when the connection normalizes again, I'm a splatter-mark.

I've read that forcing the Sarge model can alleviate this, but there are two problems:

1. It doesn't seem to help one bit, and
2. I hate the Sarge model.

Does anyone else have any suggestions for my connection? When I play at home, I have a 3.0 Mbps ADSL connection, and at work, I have a 1.5 Mbps T1. The machine I usually play on at home is an Intel Core 2 Duo with 2GB PC4200 SDRAM & Intel 945GM chipset. Work machine is a P4HT w/ 2GB PC5600 SDRAM & Intel 945GX (I believe) chipset. With that in mind, I'm not inclined to believe it's the machines themselves; gotta be something in the connection settings.

Any ideas? I want to have this resolved by the tourney. I was playing on the tournament server today, and my connection kept breaking, forcing a /reconnect.
Many thanks in advance!

OK -- if its not your box (plenty of horsepower there, eh?) then the T1 line: Is it shared? What's your firewall setup? Are there any NAT/DHCP issues? How many TRACERT bounces from you to the server? Have you done a speed check on your T1 to test your speed (www.auditmypc.com)?

Does your box have any background processes sucking up cycles, like SETI Online, FOlding, or such? How agressive is your AntiVirus program?

Just a few gotcha's to check on...

Put this to autoexec.cfg or q3config.cfg (configs in vogon-* dirs will override /baseq3, so make sure you delete them first):
seta cg_deferPlayers 1

In console:
/cg_deferPlayers 1

This will defer loading of new models, until you are fragged or hit tab (score) key -- reduces the hitch when people join.

Awesome; thanks for the info, Dyn! I'll try that first.

Ally, I use AVG, but I've already added Q3 to the exclusions list. I've not opened ports on the PIX yet because it's not necessary, since I'm initiating the connection. I'll open ports if I set up a server here @ work, but I'd have to set a script to reload standard config settings during company hours so our T1 isn't getting slammed while people are trying to work.

The T1 is awesome; no issues with the speed at all there. 1.5 all the way, baby!

I eliminate most applications when gaming. I even utilize a script which kills my explorer (blackbox.exe), the Print spooler, and several other non-necessary processes while playing.

I'll let you guys know what happens with the new setting Dyn suggested.
Thanks again!

Notice to all players: I'm officially back in business! Two things to note:

1. Editing the config files in Notepad (for Wind0ze users) is a pain in the ass. Use UltraEdit if you have it, or if you'd like an awesome open-source advanced text editor, use Notepad++: http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/site.htm

2. If you use *nix and you don't like vi or vim, use nano.

It's possible to edit the config files in Notepad, but I noticed the new-line characters you usually see when editing a *nix text or line-numbered file, and since *nix editors don't use CR-LF, it's a lot easier to use one of those, or one which mimics them.

I hope this helps whomever reads this thread. Thanks again, guys!

IRI, you crazy dawg. I use notepad and wordpad and have never had any issues. Why download a program to edit your cfg file when wordpad and notepad do it fine? Actually wordpad is better, but still part of windows.

I use UltraEdit, i don't even have Office installed here, also no antivirus or anything. All you need is XP updated to at least 2005 or so (mine is 12/2007), avoid IE/Outlook and use hardware firewall. New IE may be OK (with IEPro plugin) but there will always be more security issues with it than with FF or Opera.

Thanks for the link. :)

UltraEdit is my favourite.

If you wanna avoid viruses, just use FreeBSD. :D

Dyn, do you use NoScript with FF?

Cootie, Wordpad is my arch-nemesis. I don't like it; it's corrupted files for me before, ever-so-kindly.

Yes BSD is nice but i need stuff from here on XP. I had no virii in years and no AV either. I don't use Noscript but i disable Java usually.

Well, I completely nixed most of the spiffy graphic options in my Q3config.cfg file. No weapon draw, no blood, no giblets (pity), and r_picmip set to 4. So far, it seems to run almost too smoothly!

Next question, Dyn: When I force models, I get Sarge on everyone. I thought that in everything post-1.17, the model forced was your own. What happened? I want to blast a bunch of me running about. Besides, I look badass when other advanced players are playing my model. :)

Force model makes everyone look like you ... boring in other words. Also playing with picmip 4 is boring, i play with picmip 0 and all to max quality, except antialias. Dunno, even with average cards max quality should run smoothly.

I'll try at max spiffiness to see how that works for me, too.

Well you can play on low settings, some do that to spot players better, but i like quality, plus it makes you more alert which is good. For really max try this:

seta r_fullscreen "1"
seta r_intensity "1.1"
seta r_gamma "1.1"
seta r_picmip "0"
seta r_subdivisions "1"
seta r_lodcurveerror "10000"
seta r_lodbias "-2"

Gamma depends on your setup, but too bright may wash colors too much. Subdivisions and lod ones are higher than Max inside Q3. Curveerror is cheat protected, because some people used very low (under default 250) settings to see a bit more around the corners... bastards.

*GASP* How DARE they???

Okies, I'll copy my config and make that one, then exec it during run to see how it works for me.

Thanks, Dyn!

I tried setting my cg_fov to 220 just for S&G. What's scary about that is while you can't really see a damn thing, you know _precisely_ when to shoot when an enemy DOES become visible!
